HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
A. Project/Beneficiary Background:
TMFI has been involved in providing basic education first to adults in a number of Matigsalug communities
here in Davao City. This has resulted in parents desiring to send their children to school. One indicator
is the increasing enrollment in the grade schools found in these far flung communities. Many have already
finished the elementary level. Going to high school is another challenge. For one there is no Secondary
School where they live. If they go to the highway where schools are found they have to rent a place to stay
and spend for their food. There is also issue of supervision while they are far away from home. Most parents
are not fully capable to provide this much for their children. Thus, after they finish elementary, they
inevitably get married for want of something to do. This is a sad waste of potential for the future leaders
of the indigenous communities.
B. Project Description
Main Objective: Sponsorship for 10 first year High School students for the school year 2008-2009.
This project aims to provide partial financial assistance to deserving IP young people who will be going
into High School. Partial because it will be counter productive to totally remove the responsibility from
the parents. The financial assistance will cover about 75% of what they need for rental, food, school fees
and materials. TMFI will also conduct regular monitoring of the students and gather them for 5 days during
the break for a retreat to provide spiritual, cultural and other skill enhancement activities to assure
well rounded growth. The students will write to their sponsors every month. TMFI will give a narrative
report every quarter on the students' progress with a photocopy of their report cards noted by the
teachers-in charge.
