NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN

(March, 2001)

A single class of 20 mothers in Mabuhay in the mountains of Davao City watches patiently as huge quantities of corn meal, mongo beans, vegetables and high calcium milk are prepared for cookery demonstration.

Mothers are divided into groups and are assigned to practice proper food preparation everyday through our Supplementary Feeding project for malnourished kids. Their kids, a total of 91 of them, benefit from the drill cooking. The project runs for 4 months, an ample time for mothers to learn children nutrition, hygiene and health. It involves the whole community so the benefits of its teaching will be lasting.

"I never realized that there are new things to learn" said Rosalina Ingag. "Learning the food groups an healthy diet for the family help improve our lives." She doesn't have to worry her children get sick every time and their work production has increased. Tribal folks depend mostly on root crops and corn for food -- and these are not enough for a balanced diet. Against this backdrop, vegetables play a vital role, providing a much-needed source of protein, vitamins and other nutrients. TMFI community development workers encourage and set up demonstration vegetable gardens to tribal communities for them to model.

For Rosalina and many others, the mother's class help them feed their families better and gets them back into planning and hoping for a well-fed, healthy life.
